In Hinduism and some other faiths, ‘Om’ is a simple yet powerful word. It is the whole universe represented by this single-syllable word. Om is the union of body, mind, and soul. Om is chanted three times before meditation or as a part of our ritualistic hymns. It is supposed to be the first sound from the beginning of time and it also encompasses the present and future.

In the ‘chakra’ system, Om is connected to Ajna chakra (or the third eye), which symbolizes intuition and self-knowledge. There is also a Ganesh shloka (hymn) which starts with ‘Om Gam Ganpataye Namah’, which is chanted to break all negativity and obstacles in life. Many times, Lord Ganesha is illustrated using this powerful symbol, especially in abstract art.

Abstract Painting Images of Ganesha

You would be surprised to know that Lord Ganesha illustrates different meanings depending on his posture or characteristics. The direction of the trunk of Lord Ganesha bears symbolism as well. His paintings depict him as standing, sitting or in dancing postures. You could get Ganesha idols with trunks facing right, left, or straight. The birth story of Ganesha is a story of faith and loyalty. It is believed that one day Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva, was preparing for a bath. She had instructed Nandi (Lord Shiva’s bull) to guard the door and let no one pass. However, when Shiva came home and wanted to come inside, Nandi had to let him pass, due to his first loyalty to Shiva.

Parvati was upset as she had no one loyal to her as Nandi was to Shiva. So, she created Ganesha, from turmeric paste and breathed life into it. She declared Ganesha her loyal son. The next day, Ganesha was guarding the door, while Parvati was bathing. Once again, Shiva comes home and demands to be let in. But Ganesha being loyal to Parvati denies passage to Shiva. This angers Shiva and he severs Ganesha’s head killing him instantly.

When Parvati learns of this, she gets so enraged that she decides to destroy the entire Creation. Lord Brahma, the Creator of the Universe, pleads the Goddess to reconsider her plan. Parvati agrees given the fulfillment of two conditions- Ganesha being brought back to life and being worshipped before all the other gods. Shiva agrees to the conditions. He replaces Ganesha’s head with that of a strong and powerful elephant head. Breathing new life into him, Shiva declares Ganesha his son and the foremost among the other Gods and the leader of the masses (Ganapati).

Ganesha is given dominion over the Ganas (common life forms) ranging from microorganisms, animals, and humans to the celestial beings. These various life forms contribute to the universe of Creation- everything from natural calamities, like storms and earthquakes, to the elemental qualities like fire and water, to the functioning of the body’s organs and processes. Bu worshipping Ganesha, we are offering our utmost prayer to the basic elements of the universe and praying for success in our different endeavors. Ganesha is an embodiment of Shiva and Parvati. His depiction as part Shiva in this Ganesha painting is a unique illustration that is apt for your kid’s bedroom.
